AI and the Future of Subtitling, Peter Bjerre Rosa, DR Media Production Text
As AI continues to transform media accessibility, subtitling is at the forefront of innovation. This talk explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping both live captioning and prepared subtitling, with real-world examples from Danmarks Radio (DR).
We will examine:
* AI-driven live subtitling: The challenges of real-time speech recognition, segmentation, and error correction in a high-pressure broadcast environment.
* AI-assisted offline subtitling: How AI aids human subtitlers by handling transcription, segmentation, and condensation—freeing professionals to focus on linguistic and stylistic refinement.
* A human in the loop: Why AI needs expert oversight to ensure high-quality, natural subtitles that respect reading speed, timing constraints, and cultural nuances.
Using case studies from DR’s TVA Live and Gensyn projects, we will discuss how AI models like Speechmatics and ChatGPT can enhance efficiency, while still requiring human expertise for quality assurance.
About the speaker:
Peter Bjerre Rosa (MA, Film and Media Studies) is New Tech Consultant at DR where his main focus is speech recognition and quality control. He has 20 years’ experience subtitling theatrical films, TV shows and news programmes with Chinese as a niche language. Peter is the co-author of “Guidelines for Subtitling in Denmark”, inspired by a similar Norwegian project. Currently, his main focus is on refining speech recognition for live broadcasts.
Navigating Legal and Normative Changes in Technical Communication: AI, Risk Management, and Digital Documentation by Martin Rieder
The legal and normative landscape for technical communication is evolving rapidly, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, shifting regulatory frameworks, and increasing demands for digital documentation. Various normative standards are currently being updated, particularly in response to recent European legal adoptions that effect system documentation, risk assessment, and digital user information.
The talk will provide an overview of some of the latest developments affecting technical communicators and information developers. We will discuss and evaluate key areas such as AI technology, risk assessment aspects, and compliance. Special attention will be given to standards and regulatory updates addressing AI, product liability, and the liability for information and content, as well as their impact on technical documentation. Additionally, we will explore how risk assessment assists the development of safety-critical documentation and digital user information.
The session will discuss new requirements while leveraging digital formats to promote accessibility and user engagement. Attendees will get vital insights into how these trends are shaping the future of technical communication and how they may proactively adapt to meet new challenges and opportunities.
About the speaker:
Martin Rieder; Director and Founder of CAVEO, with a unique combination of management, leadership, and technical expertise. Comprehensive and in-depth experience in industrial engineering, technical communication, occupational health and safety, and project management. Extensive experience in compliance management, legislation, standardisation, and education. Expert member in tekom Europe's Advisory Board Regulations and Standards, expert and delegate to several international standardisation committees. As an author of numerous publications and speaker at international conferences, he is passionate about passing on his knowledge.
AI WITH DOCS - FOR REAL NOW! What if AI meets a Help web site? by Kai Weber
"We should really have an AI chatbot for our documentation!" If you've heard this, or found yourself saying it, this session is for you. Kai has been helping to make a large Help web site for financial software with user manuals, release notes, and window and field help accessible with artificial intelligence.
Hear Kai tell tales from the trenches about the promises of artificial intelligence to make software documentation great again:
- What stakeholders thought they would get - and what they really got
- If structured content is valuable to feed a chatbot
- When AI is neither nor better nor cheaper than Help with good search
- And what does it mean for technical communicators to write for AI?
Feel free to bring your own questions or use cases to consider, and we can have a lively conversation.
About the speaker:
Kai Weber, Principal Technical Writer for SimCorp, has been a technical communicator for 25 years. For the last five years, he has focused on empowering technical communicators to collaborate better, using agile processes, doc ops tool chains, and interpersonal empathy.
