What technical writers and managers should know about the regulation – including amendments through the Digital Omnibus on AI
The Artificial Intelligence Act (EU) 2024/1689 treats AI systems as products with specific requirements, particularly regarding instructions for use and technical documentation for high-risk AI systems. This whitepaper explains what technical writers and managers need to know about classification, roles, obligations and AI literacy. It already takes into account the amendments introduced by the Digital Omnibus on AI.
The AI Act treats AI systems as products with specific properties and requirements, embedded in the EU's well-established New Legislative Framework (NLF). High-risk AI systems in particular are subject to extensive obligations, including instructions for use with specified content and technical documentation. The regulation also sets out transparency requirements for general-purpose AI models, depending on whether they are classified as general-purpose AI models with systemic risk. Sean Power and Gabriela Fleischer, in collaboration with Susanna Akdut, Azadeh Eshaghi, Michael Fritz and Paula Stern, explain when an AI system is classified as high-risk, how obligations vary depending on the operator's role (e.g. provider or deployer) and what level of AI literacy the regulation requires. The whitepaper takes into account the amendments introduced by the Digital Omnibus on AI and points to tools that help organizations put the regulation into practice.
