Designing the Ideal User Journey Through Documentation
Sonia Pavlenko
Abstract
As digital products grow in complexity, technical writing must do more than describe features: it must guide users through tasks, decisions, and uncertainty. Yet many documentation systems still mirror internal product architecture rather than the user’s journey, creating friction, increasing cognitive load, and driving support requests.
The presentation Designing the Ideal User Journey Through Documentation suggests a structured approach to repositioning documentation as a core part of the user experience. It examines how users interact with content: entering from multiple touchpoints, seeking orientation, attempting actions, encountering errors, and deciding what to do next.
Drawing on real-world software documentation challenges, the presentation highlights three common failure patterns: feature-first navigation, excessive context switching, and lack of progressive disclosure. It then introduces a practical model designed to align documentation with user cognition and task flow.

Lernziele
Participants will learn how to identify structural weaknesses, reduce cognitive friction, and design content that functions as guided navigation rather than static reference. Technical writing remains a driver for the user journey, and technical writers can improve usability, reduce support costs, and enable more effective interactions with complex systems.
