Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution (‘Industry 4.0’ or ‘Smart Factory’) has lasting effects on how work is organized and executed. In this context, safety is of central importance for technical communicators: Existing, changing and new risks need to be communicated to those affected and thus achieve an organization-wide understanding of safety.

Lernziele

The aim of this webinar is to give a short overview over how safety communication is understood and evaluated in the literature. Building on these insights, safety communication a real-life use case is examined: Different forms (e.g., formal/informal, top-down/bottom-up) and means of communicating safety (e.g., physical, digital, face to face) in a partly automatized and digitized process chain in a metalworking company are presented and discussed. Participants will learn about both potentials and challenges of such communicative means and about their interplay. The example of industry 4.0 shows that technical communicators are particularly confronted with the different speeds at which technologies, corporate cultures and communication processes change.

Claas Digmayer

Dr. phil. Claas Digmayer is post-doc and research assistant at the Human-Computer Interaction Center at RWTH Aachen University (Germany). His research focuses on risk-related transformation processes in industrial settings and on technology perception examined with machine-learning approaches. In the past he has given guest lectures at tekom events on different topics, for example on the design of CAD/CAM software for industry 4.0 (Crossing Borders Event 2017) or on technical communication at RWTH Aachen University (tekom Regional Group North Rhine).
