These were the developments that had taken place by May 2004: Ten more countries joined the European Union. For the participants at the spring session in 2004, Hungary will perhaps be the best known among these new member states, quite unparalleled in terms of its language. Hungary has ten million inhabitants, of which 1.7 million live in the capital city of Budapest. 64% of the population lives in cities. The country is divided into 19 Komitats. The official language is Hungarian. The neighboring countries include Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Rumania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. It is expected to sign the Schengen Treaty by 2006, and the EURO is likely to be introduced by 2008-2010.
