Testing the usefulness of instructions through practical usability tests

Ralf Geyer

Errors in instructions such as errors in the description of handling procedures, poorly organized contents or even missing information frustrate the user who is dealing with the product, and are detrimental to the manufacturer. The practical usability test is a procedure which the technical writer can use to analyze if "his" set of instructions meet the goal, which is to provide quick and focused information for the user, helping him in installing, assembling or operating the product.
