Standards are an indispensable component on the road towards European harmonization. Standardization removes trade barriers and holds the common market together - even if some areas appear to be "overstandardized". Although the original objectives were the standardization of units and measurements, the European and international bodies seem, increasingly, to assume a political function these days.
